US Market Update: USPS to Close for Juneteenth
If you’re shipping to the USA this month, it’s worth noting that the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) will be closed on Friday, 19 June in observance of Juneteenth.
All USPS Post Office locations will be closed for the day, with no regular mail delivery or retail services taking place. Normal operations are expected to resume on Saturday, 20 June.
For most businesses, a one-day closure is unlikely to cause major issues, but it is something to keep in mind if you’re sending time-sensitive parcels, documents or eCommerce orders to the United States.
As many UK retailers and brands continue to grow their presence in the US market, even short disruptions can have a knock-on effect on delivery times and customer expectations. If you have shipments due to arrive around 19 June, it may be worth reviewing your dispatch schedule and allowing a little extra time where possible.
Understanding Juneteenth
Juneteenth is a US federal holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It marks 19 June 1865, when enslaved people in Texas were informed of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.
Since becoming a federal holiday in 2021, Juneteenth has been observed across the United States, with government offices, postal services and many businesses closing for the day.
